The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for Metformin™ Hydrochloride Extended-Release tablets 500 mg and 750 mg. It is possible that any generic Metformin™ pills could have amounts of the substance that exceed approved FDA levels.

The FDA has found high levels of N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in large lots of pills manufactured by Apotex, Teva, and Marksans. It is expected that other manufacturer recalls will follow. NDMA is known to cause cancer in humans and as a food contaminant. The World Health Organization (WHO) also classifies NDMA as a known human carcinogen.
