What Causes Testicular Mesothelioma?

There is only one known cause of mesothelioma: Asbestos. People can be exposed to this deadly material when working with asbestos products directly or just by being in a space where others are working on these materials. When asbestos dust is in the air, people can inhale or ingest microscopic fibers. These small pieces of asbestos can lodge in the tissue lining the lungs, chest cavity, abdominal cavity, or heart. It is thought that testicular mesothelioma, also referred to as mesothelioma of the tunica vaginalis testis, originates from one of these areas.

Many common industrial and household building materials contain asbestos. For example:

  • Pumps, valves, boilers, and turbines
  • Roofing and siding shingles
  • Floor tiles
  • Plaster, cement, putty, and caulk
  • Ceiling tile spray-on coatings
  • Insulation
  • Gaskets and packing
  • Automotive brakes and clutches
  • Lab equipment

People who frequently worked with or around asbestos products ─ such as industrial workers, electricians, mechanics, construction workers, and veterans ─ are most at risk for developing mesothelioma. However, there is no safe level of asbestos, and even those with limited exposure can develop the cancer.

Our lawyers can help demand compensation from the asbestos companies that failed to warn you of the dangers of this deadly material. Schedule a free case consultation now to find out what type of compensation you and your family may be entitled to.

Compensation for Testicular Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma can develop 15 to 60 years after a person was exposed to asbestos, so many people who are being diagnosed now may have been exposed decades ago. At Belluck & Fox, our skilled New York testicular mesothelioma lawyers will comb through your work or service history to identify how you were exposed to asbestos and who should be held responsible.

Depending on the circumstances of your case, we may negotiate a full and fair mesothelioma settlement, pursue compensation through a mesothelioma lawsuit, and/or file asbestos trust fund claims. We can also help you apply for veterans’ benefits.

Some of the common types of compensation we fight for include:

  • Payment for your medical bills, both those you have already incurred and those you may have for future treatment
  • Compensation for lost wages, as well as diminished earning capacity
  • Damages for the pain and suffering you have endured
  • Punitive damages, in cases involving extreme misconduct

If you have lost a family member to this devastating cancer, we may be able to help you demand compensation with a wrongful death claim.

Testicular Mesothelioma Symptoms

Testicular mesothelioma is the rarest of this type of cancer. (Pleural mesothelioma is the most common, followed by peritoneal mesothelioma and pericardial mesothelioma.) Because there have been so few cases of testicular mesothelioma, symptoms are not totally defined. Symptoms may include:

  • A mass in the testicle
  • A build-up of fluid in the scrotum
  • Swelling in the testicle

Symptoms may not appear serious at first, but anyone who has been exposed to asbestos should be vigilant about seeing a doctor immediately. The earlier mesothelioma is detected, the better treatment options a person has.

Treatment for Testicular Mesothelioma

The median survival time for mesothelioma is typically 12 to 21 months, according to the American Cancer Society. However, studies have suggested that patients with testicular mesothelioma may have a more optimistic outlook, depending on the patient’s health, age, and how early the cancer is detected.

Treatment options for testicular mesothelioma include:

  • Radical inguinal orchiectomy, in which the testicle is surgically removed
  • Additional surgeries, such as a lymphadenectomy to check lymph nodes around the site of the cancer
  • Chemotherapy to slow the spread of cancer cells and ease a patient’s pain
  • Clinical trials to give patients the opportunity to try treatments that are in the development stage
  • Holistic approaches that take into account the patient’s overall well-being

Treatment for mesothelioma can be extremely expensive, but our compassionate team works with clients to prevent them from being saddled with medical bills while their case is pending. Contact us today to learn how we can help you and your family during this difficult time.
