For years, the New Springville area was quiet and rural. This began to change in the mid-1960s when the department store E.J. Korvette opened in the neighborhood. In the 1970s, the Staten Island Mall was built, and the area began to expand even further. The new growth, coupled with its central location in Staten Island, turned the area into the transportation hub that it still is today.
