Key Features and Landmarks in Riverdale

Riverdale has been described by many as the ideal picture of an American suburb. This was due to its picturesque architecture, reliable transportation to the city, and development that preserved the area’s natural beauty.

Riverdale hosts the Saul Victor house, which was designed by Ferdinand Gottlieb in 1967. This house is a landmark, considered one of the greatest pieces from the modern architecture movement. The area is also home to several other famous mansions that date back to the 1860s. Recently, the area has seen a construction boom, with many high-rise condominium buildings popping up.

One of the most interesting features of Riverdale is the Russian Mission. The building stands tall and foreboding with no distinguishable decoration. During the Cold War era, children of Soviet officials could be seen playing at the Russian Mission School housed in the building. The building is equally mysterious today, with very few visitors permitted to enter.

Another important piece of history in Riverdale is John F. Kennedy’s childhood home. Today, the building stands dilapidated with large empty rooms and an abandoned car in the yard. You can peak into the windows to see the space where a young JFK would play. The future president attended the nearby Riverdale Country Day School for the three years he lived in Riverdale.

A Brief History of Riverdale

1850s: Riverdale as we know it today began its residential development. From the beginning, it was an estate district where many of Manhattan’s most wealthy built extravagant houses. Within the Hudson Hill neighborhood, you can see several of the mansions from this time period still standing today. The private schools and historic churches also emanate the area’s history of wealth.

1911: As the area was prepared for the construction of smaller houses, civil engineer Albert Wheeler designed a street plan that preserved as much of the wooded area as possible. The neighborhood’s first house was completed in 1911.

1950s: The New York Central and Hudson River railroad began development in the area. Resident Cornelius Vanderbilt had tracks built along the north side of the Harlem River so that trains coming from the south would come into Manhattan from his Grand Central Depot. This route constructed in the 1950s is still used by Metro trains today.
