History of GE

General Electric (GE) is one of the largest companies with one of the most recognizable names in the United States. For 130 years, GE has produced some of the most pivotal, innovative, and essential products in history. From the incandescent lightbulb invented by Thomas Edison, to household electronics and appliances, modern aircraft engines, wind turbines, and many more, it is hard to find one aspect of American life not somehow touched by GE’s massive reach.

Founded in 1892 through the merger of companies owned by the likes of Thomas Edison and J.P. Morgan, General Electric has always operated as a conglomerate of smaller companies involved in diverse industries and interests. The company went public in 1896 as one of the original 12 companies on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The humble beginnings paved a path of unmatched momentum and monumental success for the company ever since, employing over 205,000 people and generating over $74 billion in revenue in 2021. At its core, however, was the pairing of innovation and manufacturing.

Asbestos Use at GE in Lynn, MA and Salem, MA

The Lynn, MA plant has been in existence since the birth of the company in the late 1800s. A few decades later, the Lynn plant was like a second home to over 10,000 employees, many of whom worked their entire careers at the plant, and even encouraged their friends, neighbors and family members to do the same. Notable products made at Lynn include steam turbines, trolley engines, generators, and various types of lighting. During World War 2, the workforce there nearly doubled and began producing turbo superchargers for Allied fighter planes, including the first jet engine in 1942.

The Salem, MA plant opened its doors in 1955, and employed over 3,500 people at its peak. The work done at the facility primarily consisted of design and production of parts and various control systems for gas and wind turbines, and gas and steam generators. The plant closed in 2018 after more than 60 years in service.

General Electric produced many of their products using asbestos, which came in many shapes and sizes. Insulation for electrical wiring, household appliances and electronics, steam turbines, and furnaces were all manufactured with asbestos as a main ingredient.

The exposure from its products affects not only the American families and businesses who purchased them, but also anyone who serviced or maintained any such equipment, and those GE employees who helped manufacture them. Coupled with the fact that many construction materials used in building the GE production facilities also contain asbestos, employees at these plants were at nearly constant risk of exposure to asbestos fibers. But production line employees are not the only ones with risk factors for asbestos exposure from GE manufacturing facilities; GE employees stationed at power plants, electricians and engineers, construction and demolition workers, and other specialty workers within these facilities all potentially faced serious and long-term exposure to this hazardous material.

GE Mesothelioma Trust Fund & Lawsuits

Due to the company’s large scale, diverse income streams, and immense resources, General Electric has not established a trust fund for asbestos claims; the company has maintained the practice of handling these claims in the courts or via settlement agreements, despite the volume of claims exceeding 400,000.
