Asbestos Exposure in Paper Mills

Worker at Paper Mill

Pulp and paper manufacturing is one of the United States’ largest manufacturing industries, and employed millions of Americans during the 20th century.  New York was one of the most active areas for the paper industry, and was home to many of the largest and most prominent paper mills and companies of the time.  Unfortunately, workers who were employed by the paper industry are at a high risk of developing mesothelioma due to the industry’s frequent use of asbestos in most pulp and paper plants.

Paper mills had asbestos-containing equipment including pumps, valves, paper machines, boilers, turbines, digesters, and evaporators.  Asbestos, a mineral fiber that can crumble to dust during regular use and maintenance, is a deadly carcinogen that is the only known cause of mesothelioma.  Paper mills, which were often poorly ventilated work spaces, would become contaminated with airborne asbestos fibers during the normal day-to-day operations within the plant.  When asbestos dust is inhaled or ingested, it causes fibrous masses to form in the lining of the lungs that can eventually become cancerous.

Because asbestos is the sole known cause, mesothelioma could have been prevented with simple warnings and safety instructions.  However, the asbestos industry withheld this information from paper mill workers, unwilling to accept any reduction in their profits.  This caused the illness and death of thousands of paper industry workers over the course of the 20th century.  Around 3,000 Americans are still being diagnosed with the disease every year, most of whom are retired factory workers.

The law firm of Belluck & Fox has made it our mission to help victims of mesothelioma get the justice they deserve.  Our attorneys are highly experienced in asbestos law, and share a history of success in obtaining verdicts and settlements on behalf of their clients.  If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you are a victim of the asbestos industry, and have the right to seek compensation.  Money obtained on your behalf can pay for cancer treatment, and can offer peace of mind for you and your family in your time of need.  We have won over $500 million for our clients, and can help mesothelioma victims and their families in the fight against the asbestos companies.  If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or other asbestos illness, contact us using our online form, or by phone at 877-MESOTHELIOMA (637-6843) for a free consultation.  To learn more, click here to receive a free mesothelioma information package.
