Alexander Hewitt Herr founded the Hermetic Fruit Jar Company in Portland, Oregon in 1903. In 1904, the name was changed to the Kerr Glass Manufacturing Company. At the company’s inception, it did not manufacture glass but rather distributed it. In 1909, the Kerr Glass Manufacturing Company began producing its own glass. The company had plant locations in Altoona, Kansas; Sand Springs, Oklahoma; Huntington, West Virginia; Santa Ana, California; Plainfield, Illinois; Dunkirk, Indiana; Millville, New Jersey; Wilson, North Carolina, Maywood, California, and Waxahachie, Texas. The Kerr Glass Manufacturing Company was known for manufacturing fruit jars used for home caning. The Kerr glass plants were purchased by Ball Corporation in 1992.
