The Liquid Carbonic Company was founded by Jacob Baur in 1888 in Chicago, Illinois. It was originally known for supplying carbon dioxide and related equipment to soda fountains. In 1939, the Liquid Carbonic Company began producing industrial gasses including oxygen and acetylene amongst others. In 1955, the company began distributing liquid oxygen. In 1957, the company underwent a merger with General Dynamics Corporation. In 1969, it became a subsidiary of the Houston Natural Gas Corporation and in 1984, CBI Industries purchased the company. In 1996, Praxair, Inc. purchased CBI and the Liquid Carbonic Company was absorbed into Praxair, Inc.’s industrial gas division.
