In 1902, Harry Logan founded the United Refining Company in Warren, Pennsylvania. The company is known for refining gasoline, asphalt, diesel fuel, and kerosene. The oil refinery is located on Pennsylvania Avenue along the Allegheny River. The gasoline and diesel fuel manufactured at the United Refining Company refinery is sold at Kwik Fill, County Fair, and Red Apple locations in Western New York and Western Pennsylvania. The company produces 70,000 barrels of oil per day and has 4,000 employees.
Unfortunately, many of our clients who worked at United Refining Company are now being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer. Before the 1970s, asbestos was used in the forms of pipe covering, block insulation, and insulating cement at the Warren, Pennsylvania facility. Maintenance workers would regularly repair and replace old insulation, a process that causes asbestos dust to be emitted into the air and inhaled by employees.
Asbestos gaskets were also used at United Refining Company to seal pipe flanges, tanks, valves, and pumps. When repaired and replaced, gaskets were scraped from flanges and new sheets of asbestos gasket material were applied. This process caused asbestos dust to be emitted into the air and inhaled by employees.
Asbestos is dangerous because its fibers are extremely fragile and break easily into tiny particles that your body’s air filtration system can’t trap and expel. When asbestos gets into your lungs and stays there, it can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. Risk of diagnosis increases with the length of time that a person has been exposed although even short exposures can cause mesothelioma or lung cancer. The most common causes of asbestos exposure are in the workplace or from products in the home. Spouses and family members of workers can also be exposed to asbestos dust and fibers from the clothing the workers wore home from job sites like United Refining Company.
Mesothelioma is a rare disease that is diagnosed between 2,500 and 3,000 times each year. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos is at risk for developing mesothelioma or lung cancer. Although most companies knew that asbestos was dangerous, they continued to allow their employees to work with and around asbestos without protective gear until the late 1970s.
